Confucius Institute Scholarship

Sun Yat-sen (Zhongshan) University, which is located in Guangzhou, was founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1924, the great pioneer of the Chinese democratic revolution. It is a multi-disciplinary institution, ranking as one of the major universities in China and the top in South China. The university offers an extensive range of curricula covering the fields of natural science, humanities, social science, medical sciences, technology and managerial science.In order to promote the sustainable development of Confucius Institutes, facilitate Chinese language promotion in the world, cultivate qualified Chinese language teachers and talented students of Chinese language, Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters (hereinafter referred to as Hanban) launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarship” program to encourage students, scholars and Chinese language teachers across the world to study Chinese language and pursue a Special Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.


Amount

(1) Tuition: waive.(2) Accommodation: free of charge (The successful candidate can only be arranged a bed in the Double Room)(3) Living Expenses: RMB 1,700 per month for a master’s degree candidate.(4) Fees for Basic Teaching Materials: Degree candidate: RMB500/person/academic year.(5) Comprehensive Insurance for International Students in China:RMB600/person/academic year.

(6) One-off Resettlement Subsidy: RMB 1,500 for the candidates who are going to study one academic year or above. However, those who have been studying in China for half a year or above before the admission will not be awarded the subsidy.

(7) Round-trip Traveling Expenses for some candidates from certain countries or regions.


Eligible Candidates

1.Outstanding students of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) worldwide;

2. Chinese language teachers worldwide or those who intend to be Chinese Language Teachers;
3.  Outstanding performers on HSK exams and other exams held by Hanban;
4.  Winners of the "Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for ForeignCollege Students and for Foreign High School Students;

5.  Excellent graduates of Chinese majors offered by the foreign institutions of higher education across the world;

6.  Others that are up to the particular agreements set by Hanban;

7.  Some international students in China;

8. Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens aged between 18 and 35, and should be in good health.


Application Requirements

The category of Confucius Institute Scholarship for Sun Yat-sen University in 2014 is Scholarship for Students of Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (MTCSOL). Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens aged between 18 and 35 (Chinese language teachers shall be aged below 45).Scholarship for Students of Master's Degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language

1. Study Period: 2 years.

2. EntranceTime: September 2014

3. Application Requirements:(1). The scholarship is awarded to the outstanding students of Confucius Institutes (Classrooms),overseas local Chinese language teachers, outstanding performers on HSK exams, winners of the "Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students, and excellent graduates of Chinese majors offered by the foreign institutions of higher education across the world. The scholarship will cover two academic years. Applicants need to make a written commitment stating that he/she will be engagedin Chinese language teaching for at least 5 years after graduation.(2). Applicants are required to have bachelor degrees or its equivalent,and to be in good health.(3). Applicants are required tohave the Chinese Proficiency Certificate (New HSK) level 5 with 180 points or above and Spoken Chinese Proficiency Certificate (HSKK) middle level with 50 points or above.Remark: According to the “Annual Appraisal Procedures for Confucius Institute Scholarship”, students for/ Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language shall be subject to an annual appraisal organized by the host institutes in the second semester after being enrolled. Only in this way are the eligible students entitled to continue to receive the Scholarships in the following year.


Application Documents

Applicants are required to submit the following documents (All the documents should be in two copies):

1. Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form;Please note that all the applicants are required to log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website at http://cis.chinese.cn, set up an individual account, read information and introduction of host institutes and majors, complete and submit the Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form on-line. Print out the form (two copies needed), and sign your name on the form.

2. Photocopy of the valid passport (Information page);

3. Photocopy of HSK and HSKK Result Report;

4. Diploma and Transcripts. Applicants shall submit notarized highest education diplomas attained. The Master’s Degree Scholarship applicants are required to submit photocopy of degree and transcripts of BA/BS.

5. Reference Letter. Students attending Chinese language programs of universities in foreign countries with no Confucius Institutes established shall attach a reference letter signed and issued by the university president. The Master’s Degree Scholarship applicants are required to submit reference letters provided by two professors or associate professors (in Chinese or English).

6. Letter of Commitment. The Special Master’s degree applicants are required to submit a written commitment stating that the applicant will be engaged in Chinese language teaching for at least 5 years after graduation (written in Chinese andwith the applicant’s signature).

7. Winners of the finals of the “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitions for Foreign College Students and for Foreign High School Students in China are required to submit the duplicating copies of scholarship certificate and reference letter provided by educational and cultural offices (sections) of Chinese embassies (consulate-generals). Winners of preliminary rounds of the “Chinese Bridge” Proficiency Competitions in their countries are required to provide award proofs and referenceletters provided by the organizers.

8. Chinese language teachers shall submit certificate of employment and recommendation letters provided by institutes they work for.

9.  Other materials required by host institutes.



Application Procedures

Applicants are required to submit the application documents to the scholarship admission offices as follow:

1. Education and cultural offices (sections) of Chinese embassies (consulate generals);
2. Confucius Institutes (Classrooms);

3. Overseas Chinese test centers set by Confucius Institute Headquarters;

4. Institutions of higher education in those countries with no Confucius Institutes;

5. Those international students studying in China who want to apply for the program can send application documents to the host institutes;6. Other organizations appointed by Confucius Institute Headquarters.


1.  Applicants are required to log on to the Confucius Institute Scholarship website at http://cis.chinese.cn, set up an individual account, read information and introduction of host institutes and majors, complete and submit the Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form on-line, and attach the electronic files of required application documents(see Article V).

2. Recommending institutions shall exam the qualification and application materials of applicants, and submit the list of recommended applicants to Hanban by April 25th, 2014.

3. Host institutes are responsible for reviewing the qualification of applicants and submitting the proposed enrollment name list of qualified candidates to Hanban by May 25th, 2014.

4. Hanban will organize an expert panel to make the final selection and publish the name list of successful applicants on the Scholarship website by June 15th, 2014, which will be informed to applicants through recommending institutions.

5. The host institutes will post “Admission Notice”, “Enrollment Instructions”, “Visa Application Form for Foreigners to Study in China" (JW202 Form) and other related materials to successful applicants through their recommending institutions.VII. Deadline for Accepting Applications:April 30, 2014


Entrance and Annual Appraisal

1. The scholarship winners shall register at the host institutes before the deadline set by the institutes. Scholarships will not be kept for those who do not register on time without reasonable excuses.

2.  Scholarships will be canceled for those who cannot pass the health examination.

3. Students for a Special Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language shall be subject to an annual appraisal organized by the host institutes in the second semester after being enrolled according to the “Annual Appraisal Procedures for Confucius Institute Scholarship”. Only in this way are the eligible students entitled to continue to receive the Scholarships in the following year.
